Fundamentals of Scratch

We recently started working on a set of curriculum called ‘The Fundamentals of Scratch,’ in an attempt to place Scratch within a Creative Coding context for children.

While this is something we come to expect from the block-based coding framework, we argue that transitioning classroom curriculum from Game Design based theory to problem solving Design theory and Creative Coding requires new curriculum to focus the idea.

We were doing a lot of online teaching in 2022.

Working with The GIANT Room in NYC, we make and teach the Daily Creative Prompts curriculum, which involves working with students to solve design challenges in a 45 minute zoom call.

Some of these projects are in Scratch 🐈

From our previous experiences working, and still working as Lead Educator at NEST+m After3 program, we noticed that many students were struggling with basic Scratch skills we shared in our Game Design classes. Our current way of teaching wasn’t working.

Game Design projects took too long to make, students really weren’t connecting their coding and the behavior they were creating through their code.
